Part One of our National Safety Month Series: Bonfires
Summer nights are ahead of us, and so are bonfires! We have created a list of safety tips to ensure your bonfires this summer are fun and free from insurance claims.
- Choose the Right Location: Make sure your bonfire is in a safe location away from any structures, trees, or overhanging branches. It should also be far from anything flammable.
- Check the Weather Conditions: Avoid lighting a bonfire on windy days as this can spread sparks and embers, increasing the risk of fire spreading.
- Keep a Bucket of Water or Sand Nearby: In case of emergencies, it’s crucial to have a ready means to extinguish the fire. A bucket of water or sand can be used to douse flames quickly if needed.
- Build a Proper Fire Ring or Pit: Contain the fire by using rocks or a fire ring. This helps prevent the fire from spreading beyond its intended area. Document your fire safety measures, as insurers may need proof of precautionary steps in case of a claim.
- Never Use Accelerants: Never use gasoline, lighter fluid, or any other accelerants to start or boost a fire. They can cause unexpected flare-ups or explosions.
- Supervise the Fire at All Times: Never leave a bonfire unattended, especially if there are children or pets around. Assign someone to monitor the fire at all times.
- Keep a Safe Distance: Encourage everyone to keep a safe distance from the fire to prevent accidental burns.
- Wear Appropriate Clothing: Avoid loose or flowing clothing that could easily catch fire. Opt for non-flammable materials and closed-toe shoes.
- Extinguish the Fire Properly: Once you’re done with the bonfire, make sure it’s completely extinguished. Pour water over the fire and stir the ashes to ensure there are no remaining hot spots.
- Review Your Insurance Policy: Before planning a bonfire, review your homeowners or renters insurance policy to understand what is covered in the event of a fire-related incident. Contact your insurance agent to clarify any doubts and to ensure you have adequate liability coverage.
By incorporating these tips, you can ensure not only a safe and enjoyable bonfire but also that you are adequately protected in the event of an accident.
